Healthcare Coverage Influences Patient Compliance
Levels of Insured US Citizens

Four insurance categories exist in the United States that reflect patients’ economic status:3,5

Uninsured

Thirty-one to 37 million people under age 65 are uninsured, and the population is growing. The people who encompass this population include many of the poor who are not eligible for Medicaid. Minorities make up a majority of this population.

Uninsurable

The people who encompass this population are the patients who require expensive coverage for chronic diseases but who cannot access insurance because most of them will not cover pre-existing diseases. Again, minorities make up a majority of this population.

Underinsured

Up to 80 million people occupy the underinsured population. The people who encompass this population are the patients who cannot pay for the insurance copayments, deductibles, and medical services not covered by their insurance policies.

Insured

The insured population mostly encompasses those who have received healthcare benefits through employers, but the insurance packages they receive from employers are starting to see reimbursement cutbacks. For example, policies, copayments, deductibles, and lifetime caps are decreasing while healthcare costs are increasing.
