Foot & Ankle Tendonitis – Symptoms, Diagnosis & Curative Treatment
One of the most common causes of foot pain is ankle tendonitis, which is nothing but an inflammation of tendons around ankle joints.Tendonitis is defined as an irritation & inflammation of tendons caused by injury or constant pressure.
Foot & ankle tendonitis is a condition where any tendon from foot can be involved. Extensor tendonitis, as well as Achilles tendonitis, are two typical examples.
Recovery from tendonitis is a time-consuming process, and one must provide proper rest to affected tendon to heal as early as possible along with exercise and medicine. In certain cases, surgery may be indicated.

What is Ankle Tendonitis?
A strong fibrous cord that connects muscles to the bone surface is known as tendons, and it is made up of connective tissues.
Though, tendons are usually strong enough to sustain a good amount of stress; it can get hurt if it is pulled in wrong way or applied lot of pressure that it cant handle. This results into the damage and inflammation of tendons along with tiny tears in the tendon.
This inflammation is called as tendonitis. Such injury mostly get cured with enough rest to the joint and proper medication.
Usually, when any injury occurs, body increase blood supply to affected part to help that body part get cured as soon as possible. Increased blood supply then provides extra nutrient, extra white blood cells to combat infection and also plays role to clean up the unwanted chemicals that triggered by injury.
Tendons in ankle and foot area most likely to get injured due to various reasons, which results into inflammation of tendon which is known as ankle tendonitis.
The most common cause of foot and ankle tendonitis are as follows -
Constant overuse of foot & ankle tendons results in tiny tears in respective tendons leading to tendinitis. When a specific tendon is used repeatedly or pulled beyond its limit then it can cause injury that leads to tendonitis. Usually this happens in competitive sports like football.
Trauma or Injury
Direct foot injuries can also cause ankle tendonitis. Ankle sprain or pressure injuries to the foot tissue results in tendinitis.
Abnormal foot structure
Some pathological conditions that cause abnormal feet structure may cause foot and ankle tendonitis.
Conditions like high foot arch or flat feet usually cause imbalance while walking or running causing extra stress to the foot and ankle tendons. If these conditions remain untreated, it may lead to tendinitis.
Like rheumatoid arthritis, spondyloarthropathy and gout can cause ankle tendonitis.
Symptoms of Foot Tendonitis
The sign and symptoms of tendonitis in the foot & ankle region depend on the exact location of the suffering tendon as well as also vary according to the severity & stages of inflammation.
Pain is the most common sign of any tendonitis. So it also becomes the first sign ankle tendonitis. Nature of pain are usually burning and acute in nature but as inflammation increases, the pain starts to spread across the ankle reason.
Pain start with the first movement of foot & reduce with further movement for some time but also returns as movement increases. They also reduce with the rest.
Swelling may develop as condition get worse but it takes some time.
After experiencing pain and other symptoms for few weeks, you may notice small bump along the area of tendon which is soft in nature and tender.
In worse condition ankle joint become stiff due to constant pain caused by inflamed tendon.
It significantly reduces the movement of feet.

- Peroneal Tendonitis
- Posterior Tibial Tendonitis
- Anterior Tibial Tendonitis
Ankle tendonitis treatment aimed to reduce severity of symptoms and cure inflammation of tendon.
Once the tendonitis detected, avoid vigorous movement of ankle & provide sufficient rest to foot.
Apply ice to ankle for 3 times a day for approximately 15 to 20 minutes a time.
Visit doctor and take proper pills (May includes non-steroidal anti inflammatory drugs)
Wear an ankle brace to protect ankle from sprain.
