Joel S. Hochman, M.D. Biography
Houston, TX
Dr. Hochman is a founder and Executive Director of the National Foundation for the Treatment of Pain. In this position he is responsible for the overall direction of the Foundation, determining the strategies and priorities necessary for the success of its missions. He directs and coordinates the efforts of all involved, while serving at the behest of the Foundation's Board.
Trained at UCLA, Dr. Hochman is also a full time clinical psychiatrist of some 60,000 hours of experience in direct patient care. Having practiced in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for 24 years, he has extensive expertise in the treatment of intractable pain, with particular interest and skill in treating the complex psychiatric factors involved in relentless suffering.
Personally, he is also deeply familiar with the social and legal issues involved, having himself been the target of both federal and state investigations and harassment. He suffered the frustration and expense of court investigations in New Mexico for comprehensive medical treatments that included prescription drugs universally approved within the medical establishment. Although Dr. Hochman was completely vindicated in all instances the legal process created great hardships for the patients in his care. He emerged from these experiences determined to educate and advocate for social and political reform in the way drug therapies are monitored and medical decisions are literally policed. He considers himself extremely fortunate to have the opportunity to help make essential changes in old, counter-productive social attitudes and policies which inflict harm to both pain patients and their physicians.
